Example of a personally planned trip

One of my most memorable trips was to the Congo. Not just because it is an extraordinary place, but also how the idea came about and how it was later organised. I had been reading about wildlife and the experiences of researchers in the field and I was fascinated by a number of articles on gorillas. Seeing gorillas in the wild became a dream I wanted to come true.
I had read an article in National Geographic about the Ndoki Reserve in the north of Congo and was captivated by the account of the impenetrable jungle, lack of infrastructure, abundance of animals - including gorillas and pygmy elephants. I decided I had to go there.
The article mentioned the organisation that was financing the Ndoki project and after a bit of research I obtained the telephone number of the main office in the US. They told me I would have to contact the park directly and provided me with the number. Getting hold of anyone was a real challenge, but finally I spoke to a researcher. I was told that it was not possible to visit the reserve at that time but that it might me a possibility in the future. My intention, however, was to go as soon as possible, so I asked for the feasibility of visiting any neighbouring parks. He wasn't sure, but thought that the nearby park of Odzala might permit visitors.
The process started all over again; obtaining the telephone number of the Odzala park was a challenge. I eventually spoke to the project coordinator of the organisation that was financing the project but he wasn't expecting enquiries at this point about possible visits, but did mention that they were finalising a programme to permit visits to the park. He chatted about the park and what could be done at the time and ended up agreeing to a 3 week trip to the park. After that, we were in regular contact to finalise the trip details.
I would be the sixth "visitor" to enter the park. The light aircraft that took me to the improvised landing strip turned round to make ready for its return trip to Brazzaville. It was coincidence that the fifth "visitor" to board the plane was a National Geographic photographer. The very magazine that had given me the idea of visiting lowland gorillas.
